Inmitten der Sportflut bei den Upfronts rücken Präsentationen rund um Daten und KI in den Fokus

Traditionsunternehmen wie NBCU und Disney, die Tech-Giganten Netflix und Amazon sowie durch Fusionen und Übernahmen geprägte Verlage präsentierten in New York ihre sich weiterentwickelnden Angebote.

 

Bei den Upfront-Präsentationen der vergangenen Woche stellten führende Medienunternehmen ihre großen Konzepte vor, um Werbegelder zu sichern. Dabei setzten sie auf Hollywood-Stars und audiovisuelle Effekte, um ihre Programmangebote und digitalen Dienstleistungen attraktiver zu gestalten. Bei diesen – teilweise im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes – pompösen Shows wurde mehrfach deutlich, wie sich diese Präsentationen kontinuierlich weiterentwickeln, um den sich wandelnden Verhaltensweisen der Verbraucher und den Anforderungen der Werbekunden gerecht zu werden.

 

„Die größte Veränderung im Vorfeld der diesjährigen Upfronts besteht darin, dass das Fernsehen nicht mehr ausschließlich von Erwartungen hinsichtlich der Bekanntheit als Messgröße bestimmt wird“, erklärte YJ Kim, Strategiedirektor bei der Beratungsfirma AI Digital, in einer per E-Mail übermittelten Stellungnahme. „Eine hohe Reichweite ist nach wie vor wichtig, doch zunehmend sind es messbare geschäftliche Auswirkungen, die zusätzliche Budgets freisetzen.“

 

Bei den Upfronts, die von etablierten Medienunternehmen wie NBCUniversal, Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery und Fox sowie den Tech-Giganten Netflix und Amazon – die im Bereich der Fernsehwerbung noch relativ neu sind – veranstaltet wurden, kristallisierten sich mehrere Themen heraus. Marketing Dive war bei diesen Präsentationen vor Ort in New York und hat die wichtigsten Erkenntnisse aus einer Reihe von Vorträgen zusammengestellt, die mehr Gemeinsamkeiten als Unterschiede aufwiesen.

 

Live-Sport-Sieg

 

Die Sitcoms und einstündigen Dramaserien, die zuvor die Upfronts dominiert hatten, wirkten wie ein nachträglicher Einfall in Präsentationen, die zunehmend vom Sport geprägt waren.

 

NBCU weitet seine Sportstrategie für den Sonntagabend vom American Football auf Basketball und Baseball aus und bietet Werbekunden damit das ganze Jahr über konsistentere Möglichkeiten. Der Sender Telemundo wird zudem 700 Stunden Programm zur FIFA-Weltmeisterschaft ausstrahlen und bei allen 104 Spielen des Fußballturniers vor Ort sein. Fox seinerseits wird eine Rekordzahl von 70 WM-Spielen im frei empfangbaren Fernsehen übertragen, davon 40 zur Hauptsendezeit.

 

„In dieser Woche werden Sie viel über den Wert von Live-Sportübertragungen und werbefinanziertem Streaming hören. Bei Fox ist das nichts Neues: Genau das bieten wir bereits seit Jahren erfolgreich an“, sagte Fox-CEO Lachlan Murdoch während der Präsentation des Unternehmens. „Fox ist führend im Bereich Live-Programme und betreibt eine der am schnellsten wachsenden werbefinanzierten Streaming-Plattformen der Branche. Diese Kombination ist kein Zufall – sie ist beabsichtigt.“

 

Die Streaming-Dienste Netflix und Amazon warben für ihr NFL-Angebot: Ersterer erweiterte sein Programm um drei weitere Spiele, während Letzterer mit seinem Football-Programm weiterhin Erfolge verbuchte. „Thursday Night Football“ auf Amazon Prime Video verzeichnete die höchsten Zuschauerzahlen einer gesamten Saison in der 20-jährigen Geschichte der Sendung, und die Übertragung des Wildcard-Spiels durch den Streaming-Dienst zog 31,6 Millionen Zuschauer an – das meistgestreamte NFL-Spiel aller Zeiten.

 

„Prime-Zuschauer schalten nicht nur ein, sie sind voll dabei“, sagte Charissa Thompson, Sportmoderatorin bei Prime Video, während der Amazon Upfronts. „Unser Publikum ist jünger und interagiert eher mit beworbenen Marken als Sportzuschauer bei jedem linearen Sender.“

 

Um nicht zurückzustehen, bereitet sich Disney auf das vor, was Werbechefin Rita Ferro als das „größte Jahr aller Zeiten“ des Unternehmens bezeichnete – mit kulturellen Höhepunkten wie den Oscars, den Grammys, dem Silvesterprogramm, der College-Football-Meisterschaft und – zum ersten Mal – einer Super-Bowl-Übertragung sowohl auf ESPN als auch auf ABC. Laut Ferro rechnet das Unternehmen mit einem Anstieg der NFL-Impressionen um 55 % im Vergleich zum Vorjahr und damit, 40 % aller Football-Impressionen während der College- und Profisaison für sich zu verbuchen.

 

„In einem Markt, in dem alle darum wetteifern, das zusammenzustellen, was wir bereits haben, ist Disney eine Klasse für sich“, sagte Josh D’Amaro bei seiner ersten Upfront-Präsentation als Disney-CEO.

 

Daten sind entscheidend

 

Abgesehen vom Sport haben sich alle Publisher bei den Upfronts als Hochburgen von Fan-Communities positioniert, die mithilfe datengestützter, KI-gestützter Technologien das Engagement für Marken fördern. Diese Ressourcen schlagen eine Brücke zwischen dem Einkauf, der Optimierung und der Messung von Kampagnen – sowohl im linearen Fernsehen als auch im Streaming und darüber hinaus.

 

Wohl kein Unternehmen kann seinen Anspruch auf die Führungsposition im Datenbereich besser untermauern als Amazon. Der Technologieriese erreicht mittlerweile über sein gesamtes Portfolio hinweg mehr als 300 Millionen werbefinanzierte Verbraucher in den USA. Damit verfügt Amazon über die branchenweit größte authentifizierte Reichweite – 90 % der US-Haushalte – und trägt dazu bei, Streuverluste zu reduzieren und gleichzeitig höhere Klickraten und Konversionsraten zu erzielen.

 

„Diese Signale werden nicht modelliert. Sie werden nicht angenommen. Sie basieren auf Vertrauen“, sagte Tanner Elton, Vizepräsident für den Anzeigenverkauf in den USA bei Amazon, auf der Bühne bei den Upfronts. „Diese Signale verschaffen uns eine beispiellose Präzision. Diese Präzision treibt die Leistung voran, und diese Leistung liefert Ergebnisse, auf die es ankommt.“

 

Fox hob zudem seine Reichweite von mehr als 200 Millionen Menschen pro Monat auf über 1 Milliarde Geräten hervor. Das Unternehmen verwies stolz auf zweistellige Zuwächse bei den linearen Zuschauerzahlen in den letzten vier Jahren – einem Zeitraum, in dem die linearen Zuschauerzahlen branchenweit um 33 % zurückgingen. Das Wachstum wurde durch Tubi vorangetrieben, das Fox im Jahr 2020 übernommen hatte, während der Sender im April seine Werbelösungen rund um das Fox AdStudio neu ausrichtete. Das KI-gestützte Angebot umfasst ein konvergentes Zielgruppenmodell, das Milliarden von Datenpunkten einbezieht, sowie eine Mess-Engine, die Berichte über mehr als 20 Datenpartner bereitstellt.

 

„Engagierte Fans sind Ihre besten Kunden. Die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass sie Ihre Produkte kaufen, ist um 21 % höher, und die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass sie sich an Ihre Werbung erinnern, um 30 % – genau aus diesem Grund haben wir das Fox AdStudio und die dazugehörigen Lösungen zur Messung über den gesamten Funnel eingeführt“, erklärte Jeff Collins, Werbeleiter bei Fox, während der Upfronts. „Bis heute hat AdStudio detaillierte Ergebnisberichte für über 1.000 Kampagnen geliefert, die zweistellige Steigerungen bei Schlüsselkennzahlen wie dem Umsatz im Ladengeschäft und der Kundenfrequenz zeigen.“

 

Im Rahmen seiner Upfront-Präsentation stellte Warner Bros. Discovery ein „Always-On Measurement & Attribution Dashboard“ vor, das in Echtzeit Einblick in die Kampagnenleistung bietet und eine laufende Optimierung im Hinblick auf die Zielerreichung ermöglicht. Unterdessen gab NBCU, ein langjähriger Vorreiter im Bereich Daten und Messung, bekannt, dass es plant, seinen bereits angekündigten „Performance Insights Hub“ im vierten Quartal einzuführen. Der Hub integriert Messdaten von führenden Unternehmen wie iSpot, VideoAmp und EDO, und bei den „Upfronts“ gab NBCU bekannt, dass Instacart als sein exklusiver CPG-Ergebnispartner fungiert.

 

KI ermöglicht dynamische, kontextbezogene Anzeigen

 

Es überrascht nicht, dass einer der Hauptanwendungsbereiche für die Datennutzung durch Medienunternehmen in der Entwicklung KI-gestützter Tools liegt, die darauf abzielen, den Werbeprozess effizienter und ansprechender zu gestalten.

 

Amazon Ads setzte die Entwicklung von KI-Tools fort und stellte im Rahmen seiner Upfront-Präsentation „Dynamic TV Creative“ vor – eine Funktion, die interaktive Videoanzeigen automatisch auf der Grundlage des Einkaufsverhaltens der Zuschauer personalisiert. Das Tool nutzt Amazons Signale sowie KI-gestützte Funktionen zur Optimierung von Werbemitteln und zum Kampagnenmanagement, um Format, Handlungsaufforderung, Überschrift und Details je nach dem jeweiligen Punkt im Kaufprozess der Kunden anzupassen.

 

„Damit wenden wir uns von einem Einheitsansatz ab und schaffen ein relevanteres Erlebnis für die Zielgruppen, während wir gleichzeitig das Kampagnenmanagement und die Kampagnenumsetzung für Marken optimieren und dazu beitragen, dass ihre Marketingausgaben noch effektiver eingesetzt werden“, erklärte Fabrice Rousseau, Director von CreativeX bei Amazon Ads, in einer Pressemitteilung.

 

Diese Funktion steht derzeit ausgewählten US-Werbetreibenden aus Branchen wie Konsumgüter (CPG), Mode und Elektronik zur Verfügung, die über Prime-Video-Kampagnen auf Amazon verkaufen. Im dritten Quartal wird sie auf weitere Kunden und Produktangebote ausgeweitet und wird bereits von The Hershey Company genutzt.

 

Warner Bros. Discovery baute sein Angebot an Lösungen und Formaten für Werbekunden weiter aus, auch wenn die Übernahme des Unternehmens durch Paramount „den Ellison – ich meine, den Elefanten – im Raum“ darstellt, wie Bobby Voltaggio, Co-Präsident für den US-Werbevertrieb bei WBD, während der Präsentation scherzte.

 

Neben den „Shoppable Pause Ads“, die für Streaming-Dienste mittlerweile zum Standard geworden sind, kündigte WBD „Scene Level Moments“ an – ein kontextbasiertes Targeting, das auf der Technologie von Kerv.ai basiert –, „Dynamic Creative“, das Werbetitel und Bildmaterial kontextbezogen anpasst, sowie „Agentic Experiences“, die das wachsende Interesse an „Agent-to-Agent“-Werbung aufgreifen.

 

Ebenso verfügt das „Ad Studio“ von Fox über eine kontextbezogene Engine, die auf einem großen Sprachmodell basiert und Marken mit den jeweiligen Inhaltsmomenten verknüpft, um Werbeeinblendungen mithilfe von Targeting auf Szenenebene zu ermöglichen. NBCU kündigte zudem Pläne an, das kontextbezogene Targeting auszuweiten und ständig aktive KI-Agenten einzuführen, während Netflix darauf hinwies, dass seine langjährige Erfahrung mit KI und maschinellem Lernen Werbekunden wie DoorDash, Target und TurboTax zugutekommen habe.

 

Die Einführung von KI-Tools bei den Verlagen kommt den Werbetreibenden entgegen, je nachdem, in welcher Phase ihrer technologischen Entwicklung sie sich gerade befinden. Laut einem iSpot-Bericht, der Marketing Dive vorliegt, testen in diesem Jahr vier von zehn Werbetreibenden KI-basierte Werbemittel, während mehr als ein Drittel KI-Workflows und -Prozesse erprobt.

 

„Das Werbeumfeld des Jahres 2026 ist geprägt von einer entscheidenden Hinwendung zur Präzision. Marketingfachleute haben die Experimentierphase mit KI hinter sich gelassen und integrieren nun eine umfassende Workflow-Automatisierung, um die Effizienz zu optimieren“, heißt es im „2026 Video Ad Spend and Strategy Report“ von iSpot. „Während die Ausgabenprognosen angesichts der wirtschaftlichen Veränderungen weiterhin vorsichtig optimistisch sind, konzentrieren sich die Budgets zunehmend auf Kanäle, die ein Höchstmaß an Nachvollziehbarkeit bieten.“

Prior to his role at Adludio, Devin worked on the Global Brand Partnerships team at CAA Sports in London, and was International Sales Director at LoopMe where he built out the US West Coast Sales Team from Los Angeles.     Dan Bloomfield

Additionally, he spearheads mapping industry infrastructures and systems across ad servers, SSPs, and SSAI platforms, with the ultimate goal of innovating in the most efficient and scalable ways for KERV’s partners.     Prior to joining KERV, Ryan started his career at a small, local, media-buying agency that was later acquired by LIN Media before undergoing two more acquisitions into Nexstar Broadcasting.     Bill Roberson is the VP of Creative Strategy and Design at KERV.ai. Bringing over 17 years of experience in the digital space, Bill specializes in Media Buying, Client Services and Ad Operations, including Media Optimization and Publisher development. 

    Prior to KERV, Bill spent 10 years at Nexstar (Previously Lin Digital and Red McCombs Media). Bill’s intrinsic creativity and exposure to so many specialties within the Media landscape has allowed him to grow into the role he feels he was meant for: leading Creative Strategy and Design.

    Grant Gorton
    VP, UX & Design

    As KERV.ai’s VP of UX/UI & Design, Grant Gorton brings over 20 years of experience in design and creative direction. Before joining KERV, he specialized in packaging and branding design in Pittsburgh, PA. He then returned to his hometown of Austin, transitioning into digital media, where he built and managed a team of designers focused on creating custom rich media ad units, developing new products, and supporting branding and pitch materials.

    Since joining KERV in 2018, Grant has played a pivotal role in shaping the company’s trajectory by establishing and leading a team responsible for its branding and visual identity, event and social marketing, and web design. His team also developed KERV’s sales and marketing materials, spec documentation, and significantly contributed to the creation and design of the company’s comprehensive product offerings.

    Max Ochoa

    Max Ochoa is the Chief Financial Officer at KERV.ai, where he leads the company’s financial strategy and operational planning to support KERV’s continued growth and innovation in AI-powered advertising technology.

    Max brings more than two decades of experience spanning finance, legal, and operational leadership roles at high-growth, innovative hardware and software technology companies. Most recently, he served as CFO and General Counsel at Electra, a revolutionary hybrid-electric aircraft company. Prior to Electra, Max held executive leadership positions at Satelles, Alation, Turn, Adify, and TiVo.  Earlier in his career, he worked as an associate at Cooley LLP and as an engineer at GE Aircraft Engines.

    Max holds an SB in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an MS in Aerospace Engineering from The University of Michigan, and a JD from Stanford Law School. He also serves on the Board of OneJustice, a nonprofit organization focused on increasing access to pro bono legal representation in civil matters for underserved communities across California.

    In his spare time, Max enjoys swimming, singing, spirited driving, cooking, and spending time with his family and friends.

    Taylor Pate
    Chief Scientist

    Taylor Pate is the Chief Scientist at KERV Interactive, with over 16 years of experience in the advertising and creative industry, known among his peers as a technical and creative powerhouse.

    Taylor’s career began in 2008 as an animator and art director, specializing in the design and production of interactive art. He created 3D illustrations for advertisers such as HP and Dell, and developed 3D animations and tools for top video game series including Club Penguin and The Sims.

    Transitioning to focus on automation, e-commerce, and software development, Taylor joined LIN Digital in Austin, Texas. Over five years, he built a powerful framework to automate the production of thousands of rich media ads annually, developed high-performance ads for major brands, and led the engineering of PHNX, the company’s order management system that processed millions of dollars in ad campaigns monthly. He concluded his tenure at Nexstar Digital as Director of Engineering, leading a team of over 16 engineers and product managers before taking on his current role at KERV Interactive.

    Jay Wolff
    Chief Revenue Officer

    Jay Wolff is currently the Chief Revenue Officer at KERV Interactive, leading global revenue and partnerships. In addition to KERV, Jay is the President of 212NYC, New York’s leading organization for the digital advertising and the media industry. 212NYC’s mission is to build a better advertising industry by providing the programming, tools, and thought leadership to help move the industry forward.

    Jay’s expertise in scaling significant revenue and partner growth in the advertising industry spans 20 years. Most recently, Jay served as Chief Revenue Officer of Varick Media, and Chief Growth Officer at Boostr, the first end-to-end SaaS revenue management system for media companies. Previously, as Regional Vice President of SambaTV, Wolff built the revenue organization and east coast market from the ground up to $100M in revenue. Jay has been tapped for industry thought leadership and panel participation by the likes of Mediapost, Ad Age, and Digiday. 

    Prior to joining SambaTV, Wolff served as Vice President of agency and brand partnerships at PulsePoint; instrumental to the merger of ContextWeb and Datran Media.

    Originally from Armonk, NY, Jay holds a BS in Marketing from Syracuse University and a Certificate of Management from the University of Chicago. Jay resides in Rye Brook, NY with his wife, darling daughter, Olivia, and newborn son, Logan.

    Dan Bienenfeld
    President

    Dan Bienenfeld is currently the Co-Founder and President of KERV Interactive and a seasoned serial entrepreneur who has built startups for more than 35 years. Before joining KERV he has founded seven startups and architected successful exits for a number of them. For four years, he served as CEO of TimeCard Specialists, which created a cutting-edge time attendance software app that streamlined payroll for union members in the TV, film, and commercial industries. TimeCard Specialists was sold in 2016.

    Before that, he was CEO of Total Vision Care for nearly eight years. Total Vision Care built one of the largest mobile diagnostic services in eye care.     Gary Mittman is currently the Co-Founder and CEO of KERV Interactive and brings more than 30 years in technology and direct marketing, as well as substantial experience in building startups to exit with creativity and agile development. Before joining KERV he held numerous top-ranking leadership roles; Founder & President of Nami Media (which was acquired by Lin/Nexstar Media Group), CEO & Founder of Marina Communications (also acquired), and Vice President of New Business Development – Direct Response at Western International Media leading the team in the new frontier of Infomercials.

    Gary brings a decade of experience in the entertainment industry, including managing all tier one acts booking for New York City’s premiere performance nightclub “The Ritz” as its Executive Manager and Booking Agent, Executive Producer of the first MTV concert series “Live At The Ritz”, a Professional Manager at Chappell Music Publishing, and started out as an Assistant to legendary Clive Davis at Arista Records.

    Marika Roque
    Chief Strategy Officer

    Marika Roque is currently the Chief Strategy Officer at KERV Interactive, following four years as the company’s Chief Operating Officer. She is recognized for her expertise in digital media, data, and organizational infrastructures, with over 15 years of professional leadership experience. Prior to joining KERV, Marika worked as the Vice President of Digital Operations for Mass², a division of the multi-billion-dollar corporation Nexstar Digital LLC. Before that, she served as Vice President of Digital Media & Activation at LIN Digital and Nexstar, leading several departments while advising leadership on digital strategy during multiple acquisitions, including Media General, LKQD, Yashi, Dedicated Media, Federated Media, etc.

    Marika has held senior-level positions with leading agency and digital technology teams in Austin, Texas, including Sizmek and GSD&M, a subsidiary of the Omnicom Group. She also spent several years in Chicago working for FCB Global and Starcom MediaVest Group, a division of the Publicis Groupe. At Starcom, she played a key role in creating the first agency-side programmatic pipelines, contributing to what the industry now refers to as an agency trading desk. Her extensive experience in programmatic advertising dates back to its inception. She also worked on global client strategy and activation for brands like Newell Rubbermaid and their subsidiaries, including Paper Mate and Sharpie, as well as Microsoft B2B.

    Marika holds a bachelor’s degree in advertising from The University of Texas at Austin, where she was also a Division I collegiate athlete. Hook ’em.
